Peng won 6-1 6-3 against Anastasia Rodionova of Australia to create a confrontation with Italy's Sara Errani. Ivanovic of Serbia defeated Ayumi Morita of Japan 6-1, 7-6 (5), avenging a first round, losing in three sets last week and setting up a match against another Italian Brianti, Alberta.
The shock of the day was provided by the American teenager Sloane Stephens, who had an upset 6-3, 7-5 win over seventh-seeded, although potentially costly error Goerges and shameful.
Stephens beat his German rival, with a strong ground game and won despite wasting a set point when she allowed a ball that was going to hit back.
