Apple, closely followed by Samsung Electronics overtook Nokia's global market share of smartphones in the second quarter.
Apple controlled almost one-fifth of the smartphone market, or a share of 18.5 percent as it sold more than 20 million iPhones, according to market research Analytics Strategy. Samsung Electronics was not far behind, with 17.5 percent market share and 19.2 million smartphones shipped. Nokia fell to third place, with its sinking market share more than half of 15.2 percent from 38.1 percent a year ago.
The ever-changing top of the food chain smartphone is an example of the ultra-competitive nature of the company. Over the past year, Nokia has seen its market share as consumers opted for the more sophisticated operating systems manufactured by Apple and Google. The falls have forced Nokia to partner with Microsoft and change your Windows Phone.
