Hours after Steve Smith backed off his trade demand and decided to stay in Charlotte, the Panthers acquired the Chicago tight end Greg Olsen, in exchange for a future, the Panthers announced Thursday night.
The Chicago Tribune reported that the Bears will receive the Panthers third-round pick in 2012.
With Jeremy Shockey, Olsen gives the Panthers another proven receiver at tight end. He was then drafted in the first round in 2007, Olsen averaged almost 50 catches, 500 yards and five touchdowns in a season of his four years with the Bears.
Olsen is in the final year of his rookie contract.
The Panthers report to Wofford this morning after a day that saw dizzying few make more than $ 137 million to shut four of its key players with offers of five years and say goodbye to the last member of his team's inaugural .
